Chocolate-filled Brazilian brigadeiros, Argentinian banana bread, a dish of tres leches that was so popular, it didn’t quite make it to ten minutes all lined the Latinx Club’s table of treats outside the STEM wing after school on Friday, May 23. Each dollar earned by the fundraising bake sale went to the Beyond Bond and Legal Defense Fund in Boston.
The Beyond Bond Fund raises money to support detained immigrants with their legal matters.
Senior Calla Paragiri, co-president of the Latinx Club, said current immigration policies and practices have had an impact on people in the Latino community.
“Our club has always been really focused towards immigrant rights and supporting our community here in Brookline and Boston because a lot of us come from Latino backgrounds, and a lot of these people are being affected,” Paragiri said. “It’s something that we always want to highlight and we want to put into focus in the school.”
Dean of Student Support Brian Poon did not purchase a baked good, but he decided to make a donation to the bake sale.
“I think it’s important that students, for things that they care about, take steps,” Poon said. “And one of those ways is by fundraising, so I’m in favor of students being active for their beliefs.”
Sophomore Mia Jones, who enjoyed a brownie and a brigadeiro from the bake sale.
“I think it’s cool to see youth leadership and high school students empowering themselves to make changes in the world,” Jones said.
According to Paragiri, the funds from the bake sale have an effect on those within the high school’s community.
“I think that a lot of people don’t really understand that there’s a lot of other students or students’ families that are at risk, with all these things happening,” Paragiri said. “Even if it’s a small contribution, we want to try to keep all our students safe.”
