Daniel Haggerty, inspired by his own high school guidance counselor, took on the role of clinical coordinator for the Bridge for Resilient Youth in Transition (BRYT) Program. This Brookline-founded initiative provides support for students by helping them smoothly reintegrate into the high school community after prolonged absences. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Haggerty is always looking for new adventures, whether it be the Dreamfar marathon running program or kite flying. Haggerty loves being outdoors, especially if it means spending time with his family.
Where did you grow up, and how did you find yourself here at Brookline High School?
I grew up in Jamaica Plain, not too far from here. I went to high school in Needham and got a little farther away for college at the University of New Hampshire. I studied business and economics but soon after made a career change, eventually getting a degree in mental health counseling and practicing that in various agencies and schools. Now I’m here at Brookline High School, supporting the student body.
What was the highlight of your summer?
Spending time with my kids was great, and we tried out geocaching [an outdoor hiking activity where people use GPS to hide and seek prizes]. It was a great introduction to hiking for them, just going out and finding little treasures outdoors. We tracked down these geocaches and explored nature preserves, and the kids loved finding little stickers and temporary tattoos. You leave behind a little something for someone else and just spend a lot of time out in the woods. The great part was both my kids and I really enjoyed it.
What are your thoughts on reading, and what was the last great book you read?
I have been getting back into reading. I’ve been listening to a lot of audiobooks in the car on my way home. It’s been my way of taking in information and joy these days. I’m always trying new books; I’m in the middle of Malcolm Gladwell’s “David and Goliath” right now. Though, I have to say that “H is for Hawk”, a novel about falconry by Helen McDonald, was a pretty awesome read.
What’s one song that’s been on repeat lately?
“Luther”, specifically the cover by a band called Iron and Wine.
What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
Definitely with my kids, being outdoors and active. Jumping in the ocean is always a bonus. Recently, my family and I went out to Spectacle Island, which is one of the many coastal islands nearby, and you can take a boat there from Boston Harbor. We’re always looking for new adventures in the local area.
What places would you like to go to?
The top of the Prudential Center or John Hancock buildings with my kids, and kayaking out on the Charles River.
What’s your drink of choice in the morning?
Caffeine hasn’t always been my best friend, but I still enjoy it in the morning to wake me up. Usually coffee is my go-to; I really love coffee, and I’m on the fence about finding something else. Though I also like yerba maté, a caffeinated, loose-leaf tea that’s quite popular in South America, specifically, in the culture of Patagonia, Chile and Argentina. It feels more energizing and clear than coffee.
