The girls varsity swim and dive team defeated the Braintree Wamps 102-46 at their senior night meet on Friday, Oct. 10, in the Evelyn Kirrane Aquatics Center.
The first swimming event was the 200 medley relay. The Warriors had two relay teams, one with seniors and captains Daisy Huang, Mirta Ceraj, Clau Rothman and Gabby El-Chemaly, who won the event with a time of 1:59.50.
According to Huang, the main purpose of the meet was to honor the team’s seven seniors.
“I think everyone had lots of fun because that was the goal of this meet: to celebrate the seniors,” Huang said.
The momentum from the relay win carried on, with senior Gabriella Miranda-Chong winning the 200 freestyle and a strong performance from sophomore Bennett Stark in the 200 individual medley soon after.
El-Chemaly said Miranda-Chong’s performance was particularly impressive, breaking a personal record in the hundred-yard freestyle and qualifying for states. El-Chemaly also noted that the team did a great job pushing themselves.
“People were in different events than normal, trying new things,” El-Chemaly said. “I think that everyone did a really good job challenging themselves.”
Junior Hanna Shimbori won the 500 freestyle, and junior Jing Shi also made the cut for sectionals in the event.
With a substantial number of swimmers qualifying for the postseason, head coach Matt Berry looks forward to the end of the season.
“I think this is our best season in a while, so I’m excited to see what the postseason looks like,” Berry said. “We have 13 kids going to sectionals, which is a very high amount for the past few years, so that’s what I’m most excited for.”
El-Chemaly looks to bring the team’s spirited energy to their next meet against a competitive Newton North team.
“[Today’s meet] was pretty fun, so good momentum,” El-Chemaly said. “We have one meet left for the regular season, at Newton North, which is going to be tough. So hopefully [we’ll] have some fun because I think we swim the best when we’re not stressed.”
