It is finally the time of the year to fold up the sweaters, retire them to the back of the closet, and take out the sunscreen and shorts.
As always, students enjoy pulling out the perennial spring trends such as dresses, skirts, shorts, and tank tops. Sophomore Maya Teich said she enjoys wearing high waisted jean shorts or pants and crop tops once the weather starts to heat up.
However, the shift in clothing styles does not just impact the amount of fabric, but the colors as well. Junior Gabrielle Guttormsen said students usually wear lots of dresses and shorts because they are tired of pants after the long winter, but this year there is a lot less neon.
“I hated all those bright colors. It’s nice that this years there are more pastels, and soft nature in everything,” Guttormsen said.
This spring, a popular color is blue, with many students wearing blue shorts, according to sophomore Michee Mande.
“I feel like blue is really universal, you can go anywhere and see a lot of people wearing blue,” Mande said. “If you go somewhere you don’t see a lot of people wearing red or green or purples. I could walk outside and see five people wearing blue, and one person wearing yellow.”
Blue and pastels, however, are not the only colors influencing spring fashion. Students can always incorporate white or black, but this year lots of light colors, like light grey, blues, and pastel colors are also really popular, according to Teich. Color also plays a big role in the overall look of an outfit, and this spring’s colors add to a different kind of look.
“I think that style is getting a lot simpler in a way. I think it’s becoming more blacks and whites, and it makes stuff look very modern and clean cut. It’s less about neon stuff then it used to be and more just simplicity,” Teich said.
To reflect the new temperature, a newer style has developed this spring in menswear. Shorts with pale shades of bright colors, and warm colors like blue, yellow and pink, are a springtime staple, according to Mande. Many students also pair their brightly colored shorts with long socks.
“I feel like last year everyone kind of just dressed the same, but this year I feel like there is much more color and people are going to come into their own style a little more,” Mande said. “They are going to mix and match more and try different colors, different things.”
