Dear Sagamore,
I was reading the December issue of the Sagamore and came across a very large ad for plastic surgery. It said, “Making slight changes to the nose and chin create a more balanced face.” Then it said “Love your nose!!!”
I still haven’t stopped thinking about it, so I’m writing to tell you why. High school is a time when almost nobody is completely confident about the way they look. Not only do most of us look at ourselves with critical eyes, but the world reinforces unattainable beauty goals everyday.
I think we should be reinforcing body positivity and accepting each other’s and our own uniqueness rather than advertising that the way to be happy is to change something about yourself. Everyone is free to make their own choices about cosmetic surgery, but I wish the editorial board had considered the potential damage to students’ self-esteem before they accepted this ad.
