A senior was struck by a car on Tappan Street Thursday morning and suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to lieutenant Phillip Harrington of the Brookline Police Department.
The car stopped at the stop sign on Greenough Street at 8:16 before turning left and hitting the student, Harrington said.
The student has multiple broken bones and medical staff members are continuing to monitor her for additional injuries, Headmaster Deborah Holman wrote in an email.
The school has requested and received an additional morning police traffic presence at the Sumner/Greenough/Tappan intersection for the next few weeks, Holman wrote in a letter sent to parents and guardians Friday afternoon.
She wrote that the school is working with police to more clearly determine and designate drop-off zones. She will explain those decisions next week.
“While the Brookline [Police Department] and school administration will have an increased presence around the school during drop off, the prime engine of safety are the eyes, ears and good sense exercised by our students. Please help us reinforce this message,” Holman wrote.
The student was taken to Boston Children’s Hospital by ambulance following the accident.
The driver, who Harrington said stopped and pulled over after hitting the student, was issued a citation for failure to use care while turning.
