On the night of one of the best and most entertaining musical traditions at the high school, Open Mic Night, the attendance was rather disappointing at a mere 11 students in total. Nonetheless the atmosphere was as lively as it could be as everyone was laughing, eating snacks, and having a good time in the band room on April 16. There were four performers, one of which was a group.
The show began with a performance by a band made up of junior Zach Altshuler (guitar and lead singer), junior James Monaco (bass), senior Gabe Mininberg (saxophone) and junior Neda Morakabati (drums). They played rock n’ roll type music. Instead of playing songs that actually existed or that they had wrote, they played freely, by picking a chord and playing their music off of that. Despite their unexpected approach, they all played in harmony and they sounded phenomenal.
Next up was senior Mike Suh, who played the electric guitar and sang beautifully. His outfit was almost entirely black, as his shoes were the only part of his outfit that contained some white as well. He sang four songs, including two about professional wrestling.
The crowd was extremely intrigued throughout Mike’s performance. Even as a solo musician, he looked confident in the spotlight from start to finish. Though he sang his final two songs louder and played them at a faster tempo than the first two, Mike was very well-versed and smooth throughout all four songs. The slim crowd made lots of noise after each song and even the other performers showed their amazement.
The third talent of the night was freshman Sammy Davies, who rejoiced on the piano. He played a song called “Foolish.” The song did have lyrics, but Sammy wanted to avoid singing them due to his lack of confidence in his singing ability. The crowd was very supportive of Sammy and he played with an excellent rhythm and tone.
The fourth performer was Ian Mitchell. Ian played the accordion, which was an interesting instrument that appeared to be challenging to master. But Ian played it well. It was an impressive performance that capped off the night in style.
