In bright, sunny weather, the high school’s varsity lacrosse team beat the Dedham Marauders 15-2 at home on Tuesday, May 5th.
The match started at four at Downes Field. Before the match started, head coach Steve Zella explained his thoughts on how this year’s team is better than last year’s, due to fewer injuries and more experience.
Zella also added that he wanted to get junior varsity players in the game as well, and have all people play, since Dedham is one of their weaker opponents.
Although the Dedham Marauders came in full spirits and hopes for a victory, the Warriors kept them at bay by maintaining their aggression on the attack for most of the first quarter, after winning all of the face-offs but two.
Their long-lasting offense earned the high school a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, including three of senior Clay Goldthwait’s seven goals.
The game resumed in the second quarter with a different tone. Although it started off with a goal from the home team, Dedham managed to return the favor through scoring themselves.
The second half began and the Marauders scored once. The Warriors managed to reply with a goal of their own, and like the second quarter, played at a slower pace, scoring less goals.
The final quarter began with a vibe resembling the first one. Players rushed onto the field with full vitality, but despite their new-found aggression, their scoring spree paled in comparison to that of the first quarter.
The final goal from Brookline came from Nicholas Gerzsten, achieved through maneuvering single-handedly through the defense and forcing the ball in the net. The last five minutes had a passive tone, where no more scoring was accomplished.
Both teams battled hard, but it ended up being a 15-2 home victory for the 7-4 Warriors.
