Former US Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, previously a First Lady, now hopes to become president.
It is very exciting that Hillary Clinton could be the first female president. But I am not just voting for Clinton because she is a woman. I am also voting for her because she is simply the most qualified person for the job. She is a central figure in the Democratic party who will gain support from voters across the political spectrum.
As of now, Bernie Sanders is the only other announced candidate for the Democratic primary. However, the race is expected to expand, possibly including Senator Elizabeth Warren among others. While I do not doubt that other politicians are qualified for the presidency, I do doubt that they will unite the party as strongly as Clinton will.
Senator Elizabeth Warren is one possible candidate. Unlike many other elected officials, Warren has stayed true to her promises in 2012. She said she would fight for the middle class, and she has done that, recently standing her ground against many big Wall Street banks. Senator Warren’s stern stance is definitely admirable, but to be realistic, it is the kind of stance that she would never be able to take as president.
As President Obama has shown us over the last seven years, it is nearly impossible to take an unwavering stance on just about anything. Moreover, this ironclad position is one that alienates a large portion of the more centrally-minded electorate.
Then there is Bernie Sanders. I agree with his views much more than I agree with Clinton’s. But the United States of America would never elect someone with such leftist views on the environment, education, Israel and other issues. Therefore, it is unrealistic to think he could become our next president.
Clinton is well-liked by the American public despite every scandal she has been involved in, from Monica Lewinsky to Benghazi to her use of her personal email at the White House. Furthermore, she has the most varied and most unique political experience out of all of the potential Democratic and Republican candidates.
As First Lady, Hillary learned the inner workings of the White House during her experience in the stressful life of one of the busiest occupations in existence. That is arguably better experience than even navigating complex foreign affairs, which she did as Secretary of State, not to mention the work she did as a senator. No other presidential candidate can say they have done as much.
To me, it is pretty clear. Hillary Clinton is the best choice we have. So I’m voting for Hillary.
