Football tops Boston Latin in season opener
September 15, 2015
On Saturday, the varsity football team opened its 2015 campaign with an exciting 30-20 win over Boston Latin School at Parsons Field.
A few plays after the opening kickoff, junior quarterback and defensive back Marquis Miller hit receiver and defensive back Sam Feingold-Gardner over the middle for an 84-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. Both teams then went on a long scoring drought until six minutes left in the second quarter, when Boston Latin senior and co-captain Andreas Kaplan hauled in a goal line touchdown pass from junior quarterback Griffin Li to tie it up 7-7.
The two teams went back and forth playing for field position for a few minutes until Kaplan took the lead on a long BLS drive that ended with the senior captain rushing into the endzone for his second touchdown of the game. Boston Latin intercepted Miller on an endzone pass with five seconds remaining in the half to keep the Wolfpack in the lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, the Warriors’ defensive backs took control of the game. Miller redeemed himself on the other side of the ball by intercepting Li on a pass around the 50-yard line and taking it to the end zone with 9:30 left in the third quarter. A missed PAT would make it 14-13 Wolfpack. After a Wolfpack rushing touchdown, Junior Shay Wenglin took his own interception to the house just three minutes after Miller’s to make the game 20-20 going into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter was all Warriors. Junior Eli Hopkins knocked in a 33-yard field goal and Wenglin added a 48-yard rushing touchdown to seal the deal for the Warriors as they opened up their second straight season with an opening night win over the Wolfpack.
