On Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the opening performance of the high school’s production of Queen Lear, senior Sophia Pouzyrev, who plays the lead role of Lear, dislocated her shoulder on stage.

After exiting the stage with an injury that some members of the audience believed to be a part of the production, the rest of the cast continued performing for 10 minutes until drama teacher and technical director Mark VanDerzee turned on the house lights and announced that the injury was real and that the show was being put on hold.

A few minutes later, VanDerzee came out and announced to the audience that the show was cancelled.

During the break, the high school’s athletic trainer Alex Jzyk was called to help put Pouzyrev’s shoulder back into place. VanDerzee told the audience that Pouzyrev was fine, but currently wearing a sling.

Reportedly the show is being altered because Pouzyrev will remain in a sling throughout the remainder of the performances.

According to VanDerzee the cast is finishing the night with a rehearsal. The show is scheduled to go up again tomorrow, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert-Dubbs Auditorium, and any audience members present during the showing this afternoon are offered free admission to the next show.
