Review: Micsgiving

Ido Kushner

The night kicked off with a performance by senior Zach Altshuler and band director, Carolyn Castellano. The duet performed the song “It’s Too Late” by Carole King, while the audience clapped their hands to the fast tempo.

Micsgiving, the high school’s November Open Mic Night on Tuesday, Nov. 24, gave students the chance to perform at a casual, non judgmental atmosphere in front of their peers.

The next performance was by seniors Neda Morakabati, Sammy Davies and Evan Jacobson on the saxophone, drums and piano. They performed a jazzy piece that started off slow but gained tempo as the song progressed.

Next, a group of 12 Camerata Choir members performed “Risky Business.” The song was intense and harmonious, chilling the audience. The singers were arranged from left to right based on the pitch of their voices.

Next up was senior Ian Mitchell who played “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing” by Duke Ellington. He performed the song on an accordion, and its uptempo beat had the audience snapping their fingers throughout the song.

Freshmen Reuben Ramos and seniors Jesse Fletcher, and Hal Triedman played the song “There Will Never Be Another You” by Frank Sinatra. The song featured a piano solo layered over a fast drum beat.

The next act was performed by senior Christine Huang. Although nervous, she delivered a humorous set of jokes, and then delivered an emotional speech about struggling with social shyness.

Next up was sophomore Jason Altshuler and senior Zach Altshuler performing “Bell Bottom Blues” by the band Derek and the Dominos and “Something” by the Beatles on the guitar and piano.

Next, seniors Shane Dahler, James Monaco, Tristan Geary, and Hal Triedman performed “There Will Never Be Another You” again on the guitar, bass, drums and piano. In a last minute addition, sophomore Jason Altshuler joined in on the trumpet. They breathed new life into an old classic with their uptempo beat and jazzy sound from the trumpet.

The last performance of the night featured two Brookline High School ’14 graduates, Yiorgos Karaminas and Mike Suh. Karainas and Suh sang “The Bed I Made” by Allen Stone. They later sang a rendition of “Hold On We’re Going Home” by Drake. Suh ended Micsgiving with a quality performance of “Suicide Saturday” by the band Hippo Campus.[/fusion_text][/one_full]
