On Tues Dec. 22 at 6:45 p.m. in the Band Room, a quiet group of people were getting excited for this month’s Open Mic Night – christened “A Merry Little Mic.”

Christmas Tree lights of blue and green were hanging on the walls and the holiday themed cookies and candy canes made attendants feel cozy and festive. This wintery theme inspired many of the performers to perform holiday music at the event.

Hosted by a different member of the school’s Jazz Band every month, this Mic’s host, senior Eddie Cipullo started the event promptly.

Opening was a holiday jazz tune, “Love Is Here to Stay,” performed by seniors Samuel Davies, Eddie Cipullo, Neda Morakabti, James Monaco and Ian Mitchell, all members of the Jazz Band.

Following this performance was sophomore Amber Blu and Morakabti performing David Guetta and Sia’s “Titanium.” Both sang and played the piano at the same time, including harmonies and different registers on the piano.

Senior Hal Triebman, following the holiday theme, performed a delightful selection from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and the three Fletcher brothers, naming themselves the “Fletcher Collection,” sang a song all together, adding an additional verse at the end for fun. Later on, sophomores Jason Altshuler and Jack Lewitt performed together, both on guitar with Altshuler on vocals.

There were technical bumps and pauses throughout the performance, but the mood was always light and cheery. It seemed to be a classic pattern, when there were pauses setting up, for the next performers to tell weak and age-old jokes to the small crowd. They were met with the expected groans, but even then kept everyone entertained in this holiday setting.

Soon, members of the Jazz Band camp together again to perform the tune “All Blues.” They would be figuring things out in the middle and laughing, and it made the whole scene interactive for the audience. Following this performance, a group of sophomores came together and performed “All Again For You” by We The Kings. Senior Talia Lanckton was on vocals, with Sammy on piano, Ian on accordion and Nathan Hazen on guitar.

Performers at this event ranged from freshmen to previous graduates, and anybody was welcome. In such a fun, festive and inviting place, it was hard to notice the little crowd. The small group of people filled the room such energy that all anyone was thinking about was having a good time, and that’s what the event ended up being.
