Despite strong performances, girls indoor track falls to Weymouth

The girls track and field team moved back under .500 with a 62-38 loss to Weymouth on Thursday, Jan. 21. Now with a 2-3 record, the team has one dual meet left, followed by the postseason meets.
Athletes who placed first in their events against Weymouth included senior Rae Swardstrom (mile), junior April Bagnani (2-mile), and junior Patricia Douglas (55 meters, high jump).
The meet started out with a win by Swardstrom, who ran 5:41.99 for 13th in the Bay State Conference, and 1st against Weymouth. Maddie Nagler scored in the 1000 meter, running a personal best 3:21.45 for 2nd against Weymouth. In the 600 meter, senior Emma Larrabee ran 1:46.14 for 2nd against Weymouth and 7th in the conference.
A top event for the team was the 2-mile, where Bagnani and junior Sofia Georgaklis placed 1st and 2nd against Weymouth to secure 8 points in the event. Bagnani, however, was disappointed with her personal performance.
“It wasn’t that great,” Bagnani said. “I ran the same as last week, but I was hoping for a [personal best].”
In other track races, sophomore Mary Corcoran placed 3rd against Weymouth in her first-ever 300 meter (44.43), and senior Priscilla Chung was 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles in 10.27.
Another strong performance for the girls was Douglas’ race in the 55 meter, where she placed 3rd in the conference in 7.64 and posted another win for Brookline.
Off of the track, Weymouth swept Brookline in the shot put. Douglas grabbed yet another win in the high jump at 4’11” and a second place in the long jump at 14’8.75”. Douglas ended up scoring 13 of the team’s 38 points.
Weymouth won the 4×200 meter and 4×400 meter relays to finish the meet.
“Next week, I think we’re going to go more for depth,” Bagnani said. “Because right now we have one good runner in each race, but we’re trying to get more than one.”
