The sounds of gun shots coming from the Hoar Sanctuary behind the Baker School were reported to the Brookline Police on May 23 at 8:30 a.m. Baker was immediately put into a lockdown to protect the students, and an investigation followed in the area. After the investigation, the police stopped a man with an air rifle, according to an email sent by Interim Superintendent Joe Connelly. The man had been practicing target shooting with his weapon. No one was injured, and the school then resumed its regular schedule.

Below is the email Connelly sent to the Brookline community:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. the Brookline Police received reports of shots fired in the Hoar Sanctuary behind the Baker School. Police immediately secured the building to ensure the safety of all children. After investigating the matter, the Brookline Police stopped and identified man who was target shooting with an air rifle.

We want to assure all parents that students were safe at all times.

Thank you to the Brookline police for their quick action and support while the situation unfolded. Police will remain on scene.

I repeat all students are safe and normal activities have resumed at the Baker School.
