What’s something you always remember to do when you’re teaching?
As a teacher, I always want to infuse some sort of “funness” into the classroom. I want to be entertaining while also teaching to keep my students engaged. You know, to try to get a smile or laugh at a corny joke or pun.
What’s your motivation for teaching?
A long time ago, when I was in school, I was a special ed student, and school was difficult for me up until maybe my sophomore year of high school, when I kind of figured things out on my own. I think being someone that still has a learning disability, working with students with learning disabilities is important for me.
Tell me more about how your experiences affect your relationships with special ed students?
I can identify with their frustrations. I understand their frustrations because when I was their age I had those same frustrations. Also empowering students to be independent. What accommodations or things do you need to do to be successful, I think, is one of the biggest things with understanding how to be an independent learner. Regardless if you have a disability or not, how do you learn independently? What things do you need or how do you go seek help so you can still perform?
