Why did you become a teacher?
I am a speech therapist. I knew that I didn’t want to be a “teacher” teacher because I really like working one-on-one and in small groups with students. I love helping people, so that’s why I first went into it.
What was your high school experience like?
Grades were very important to me; I was in some honors classes. I was on the dance team, and I was on the cheerleading team, so I was involved in that way. You had to get a certain number of volunteer hours, so at that time I was volunteering at a homeless shelter. It was what prompted me to go get my master’s later on in speech.
What has been your favorite thing about the high school so far?
Everyone has been very friendly and has gone above and beyond to make the new teachers feel welcome. I feel very supported, and if I have a question I am not shy to ask it. Not every school is like that. Everyone here has been very warm and accommodating.
Is there a high school tradition that you’re excited for?
On the first day of school when we welcomed the ninth graders, that was really cool. It must have been a really good feeling as a freshman, coming to a huge school, just like, “we are here for you.”
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I feel like I was able to meet a lot of the staff at the new teacher meetings and orientations. I am excited to be here; that’s really it. So far, it’s great.
