Andrew Larson
Former barista turned paraprofessional, Andrew Larson likes graphic novels, Harry Potter and working with students. He is switching from Starbucks to the classroom and is super excited to be here.
Why did you choose to become a paraprofessional?
I have always enjoyed working with students. I have gone back and forth regarding what I want to do as a profession: teaching or being a social worker working with students. My main career goal is to be a guidance counselor, so I’m currently in school to get my master’s. To continue working with students, I decided to pursue being a paraprofessional and at the same time further my education.
Did anything stick out to you in your first few days?
The one thing that’s definitely stuck out is the sense of community here. I remember during my interview I was really struck by the community. There were people outside on the field, and it just seem like a great place to be.
What other jobs have you had in your past?
After I got my undergrad, I moved to Los Angeles. I did a program called City Year through Americorps which is like a volunteer organization. I worked in a high school with ninth graders. I have also been a mentor, tutor. Just a lot of work with students.
Is there anything you want to share with the Brookline community?
I am very excited to be here. I have felt very welcomed by the community and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone. Hopefully I will be here for a long time.
