Steven Goose is a first-year paraprofessional at the high school this year. Prior to working at the high school, he worked with kids as a camp counselor and as a teacher at a middle school in Natick. In his free time, he enjoys writing, as well as watching sports, specifically his favorite basketball team, the Celtics.

What made you want to become a paraprofessional?

This is my first year of being a paraprofessional. Before this, I worked at a middle school in Natick, and before that, I was a camp counselor for kids, so I’ve been working with kids for a really long time. Seeing kids succeed is something that’s important to me, so helping them do that is something I really love doing. I discovered over the course of a couple years that I didn’t want to be at the middle school level forever. I wanted to be at the high school level, which is why I decided to come here to work. Over the years, I’ve heard great things about Brookline and the high school, so it’s really exciting for me to be able to work here.

What were some activities you took part in over this past summer?

I visited my brother in Vegas. He was out there working, so I was able to go out there to spend some time with him. I’ve never really traveled out west or that far into the country before, so that’s kind of exciting for me. It’s a very different environment than around here, so that was really cool to experience.

What do you like best about the high school so far?

I like how everyone’s so friendly; whether it be teachers or students, they’re really invested in what’s going on, which makes them more friendly towards one another and more interested in one another’s lives. I really appreciate that, as someone who hasn’t always seen that in schools.

What is involved in being a paraprofessional?

I’ve been working with kids in different classes, so I’ve really enjoyed having the opportunity to work with a whole range of different ages of students. I’ve been helping certain students make sure they’re able to follow along with what’s going on and follow directions in terms of taking out and having what they need for class. I also work with kids in a study skills class, which helps them get organized and learn other skills to make sure they’re able to succeed in the school.
