Joon’s Tech Corner: The Beats by Dre are garbage
You see them everywhere. Walk into any large crowd of people and you will spot someone with Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, with their glossy black finish and that big red “B” on the sides.
Similar to how the iPhone is with smartphones, Beats headphones have become synonymous with headphones in popular culture. If you want to listen to rap music, the Beats are by far the best headphones to buy, right? Wrong.
There are many reasons people want to get Beats. They are among the best-looking headphones, provide a ton of bass and attract attention (come on, I know you like it when people ask about your stuff).
To be honest, all of the versions of the Beats are extremely weak and overpriced headphones, but they are brilliantly marketed.
They are not good headphones for the price (the price of over-ear Beats ranges from $180 to $500). In addition, there are even $100 headphones that sound better than Beats. If you are going to buy headphones to listen to music with, why not buy something that actually produces sound good enough to warrant your money?
Now, I know what you are thinking: But the Beats have such awesome bass! Yes, while the Beats are very bass-heavy, they are really bad at reproducing bass. The bass is over-emphasized and fake, and it overpowers all other aspects of the music you are listening to. If you want a pair of headphones with better sound and even better bass than the Beats, check out Sony’s MDR-XB500 or -XB700 headphones. They are sub-$100 headphones that produce excellent sound.
A quick comparison: Some cheap $30 Skullcandy headphones produce the same sound as the Beats, and Skullcandy is an awful brand.
The fact that all of the top artists are wearing Beats in their music videos does not make them good headphones. They are either paid to wear them or have been given them for free to use.
Noise-cancelling headphones are also a joke. If you get a good pair of headphones, they will seal off your ears and not let in any sound. Beats and Bose headphones both utilize this “feature,” adding an extra cost to your already expensive headphones.
Noise-cancelling headphones are not even necessary if you get a pair of headphones with a good seal around your ears. These seals are scientifically proven to hinder ambient noises. At this point, Beats and Bose headphones are the only major brands that still implement noise-cancelling technology in their products, and there is a reason that they are the only ones.
I have nothing against noise-cancelling headphones. Bose has perfected the noise-cancelling model. But if you listen to a pair of Beats, put them on without any music playing. Hear that hissing noise? That is the sign of awful noise-cancelling technology. Yes, it will cancel noise; but, with that hiss, the sound quality is actually getting diminished.
Ask anyone knowledgeable about acoustics and he or she will laugh off the Beats as a legitimately good pair of headphones.
So, you are probably asking, what are some good headphones that actually produce good sound? If you are someone who does not care about the looks of headphones very much, try Sennheiser, Audio-Technica or Beyerdynamic brand headphones. On the other hand, brands like SOL Republic, Fanny Wang, AKG, V-Moda and Subjekt sell headphones that not only look pretty awesome, but also produce very good sound.
Bottom line: Take that money you were going to buy Beats with and get a pair of headphones that warrant that cash you worked hard for. At the end of the day, headphones should be about listening to music, not about how cool they look or how much street rep they get you.

This article is written poorly. How many times must you state the same opinion? Noise cancelation was developed not for music but for professionals working around machinery. It works well in tuning out air plain, train, and automobile engines too so it was emoluments into headsets. This is why only select headsets have it. So the people who benefit from it can purchase them. It’s not meant to tune out your mother yelling at you to do your chores. If you find them useless to you, maybe they’re not for you. Buy something else but don’t be mad that you made an uneducated purchase and spent money on something you didn’t need, idiots.
“If you get a good pair of headphones, they will seal off your ears and not let in any sound.”
“Noise-cancelling headphones are not even necessary if you get a pair of headphones with a good seal around your ears.”

Skip the headphones altogether and go with custom made in-ear monitors. Much better sound reproduction!

The day I buy a set of Beats headphones is THE DAY I WIN A CASH FOR LIFE lottery, just to see what the buzz is about.
IT WILL ALSO be the day I stop using the less shady lines of public transportation and start avoiding the seldom traveled areas of Manhattan…
I know, IMO, but Beats are hardly more than ELECTRONIC BLING, and I like to think Beats fanboys pretty much deserve to get mugged and BEATen (pun intended).
I mean, that $200+ bucks goes a LONG WAAAY towards a new Android smartphone (FYI, I give up on iOS after trying a̶n̶d̶ ̶u̶s̶i̶n̶g̶ the 4s for TWO trying, exasperating YEARS).
Or personally, a REALLY damn good bishoujo anime figure.
JVC Marshmallows, in my experience, are the best damn range of earbuds, cost less than $20, plus they all include a mic/remote!

Help! My dad got me beats because I finally got him to trust me with something expensive in my care. I had no idea beats sucked so much until I started using them. How do I prove to my dad that it isn’t my fault he accidentally bought total crap?

Well, I hope he kept the receipt, so you can exchange it for something hella more useful, like a mini Tablet, or a 3DS AND a PSP, or food for a month.

Look up TASCAM TH-MX2 on Amazon for 30 (!) bucks! That thing sounds like a $200 headphone, not a Beats but a real $200 worth of headphone. Many, including me, was blown away by it!

The ORIGINAL Beats by Dr Dre was made by American Audio. They were Professional Grade DJ Headphones. Since they dont make them anymore, the same model, the HP550 by American Audio is the updated version, handles way more power than anything in its class, and its extremely accurate, while having the hard hitting yet accurate bass so desired coming from the 58mm Drivers than handle a whopping 3,200mW at 103db sensitivity. These are real headphones, not the Crap from Monster, the same people that make budget line speaker cable.

I tried the beats and liked them, but wouldn’t buy at that price. I’ve got a pair of philips oneill right now and they are okay, but lacking in brightness (plus the cord is only 1.2m). I’m thinking I’ll go sennheiser when I’m ready.

Another Bose Junkie. I pity you. Beats are just about the best looking headphones on the market, with quality sound. Sure there are better brands out there in terms of performance, but none as sexy or as sleek as Beats, and being a person who is deeply appreciative and into both fashion and all genres of music, you won’t catch me with anything else. If you want ugly, flimsy headphones with poor performance in comparison then be my guest and buy Bose instead. But I, a prideful man never looking back on his choices, who can pay the price times over will gladly buy Beats By Dre. I care little for what any Audiophiles or any of you would have to say against my choice, though you’re welcome to do so.One last note if you think Beats are bad quality your music is bad quality.
Garzhad • Dec 1, 2014 at 1:42 pm
Beats look bad and have crappy sound, over emphasizing distorted bass over all other aspects of sound quality. He’s also not a Bose junkie you dingbat, he advised against them due to the same unnecessary cruddy sounding ‘noise cancelling’ features and recommended numerous other brands that accomplish the safe without distorting the sound.
But your words say it all. You’re a prideful who can’t bear to acknowledge the fact you wasted your money on a pair of stupid-looking sub-par headphones. You’re naught but a poser stepping on the toes of audiophile giants that understand the true meaning of quality music.

true beats are too overpriced 😀
Evan Sternstein • Feb 1, 2012 at 1:50 pm
I disagree. Beats by Dre are a masterpiece as far as headphone’s are concerned.
Kyle • Dec 6, 2014 at 11:22 pm
Haha your funny beats have mastered blowing up the sound to make you think it sounds really good but mids at muffled and a majority of people’s voices with not be clear and all bears cost less than $50 to make. Your better of with a headphones that give that most flat sound and that best frequency response then music of all kinds will sound great and if you want more bass then use an eq btw my favorite are the Audiotechnica ath m50s and I have owned beats studios

Brilliant. I try to dissuade everyone from getting Beats, especially the over-ears.
Marques Brownlee • Jan 3, 2012 at 8:50 pm
Well said! I’ve used $150 headphones that sound 10X better than the Beats Studios. Great article.
Quinn Nelson • Jan 3, 2012 at 8:48 pm
Agree completely! 🙂
