Alisha Andrew

Prior to working full-time, math teacher Alisha Andrew taught the Calculus Project, a program for students of color and low-income students to improve their math skills. She went to Driscoll Elementary School and the high school and recently graduated from Bridgewater State University. In her free time, she loves listening to all types of music, especially Caribbean Soca.

How long have you been teaching?

I’ve only taught during the summer classes, so this is my first time actually teaching during the school year!

What was your relationship like with math in high school?

At first my relationship with math was terrible, but then I started to understand it a bit more, and I had more patient teachers who actually took the time to teach me.  

Why do you think math is important?

Math helps everyone in life. How could you run a business without knowing math? How could you go to the grocery store without simple math? Math runs the whole world, so that’s why it’s important.

If you could go back in time and talk to your high school self, what is one piece of advice you would give?

I would tell myself to review the homework on my own after I got the answers and study that before a quiz or test comes. If I had gotten into that habit in high school, it would have been easier in college.
