The second annual Poetry Out Loud competition was held Thursday, Feb. 2 in the Black Box. Twelve students recited poems and were evaluated by a panel of four faculty judges. Senior Max Peabody, who performed “Golden Retrievals” by Mark Doty, was named the winner, placing in front of runners-up Queen-Tiye Akamefula and Mattie O’Kelley-Bangsberg, both freshmen.
“I was incredibly scared that I was going to do badly or that I would freeze up, but I tried to work through it,” said Peabody. “I’d like to get as far as I can, represent myself and my school as best I can.”
Peabody will be competing with other school-wide winners the Massachusetts semi-finals, to be held at the Huntington Theatre in Boston on March 3 and 4.
The Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
