Brookline High School’s wrestling team secured a back-to-back Baystate Conference League Championship win during their senior game, crushing rivals Newton North High School 56-18 at their last home match.

The warriors have been working hard this season and the results paid off. They met their goal of winning 25 of their 29 total matches.

Senior and captain Luke Albanese was the victor in his personal match, beating his opponent with a technical fall. He scored enough points to terminate the match. Albanese was proud of the effort his team brought and is excited for what this could mean for the future.

“This match means a future of success. We’re here to stay and this proves it wasn’t a fluke that we won the baystate last year because we won again this year,” Albanese said.

Though it took everyone to ultimately win, each wrestler had to focus on their individual goals in order to pull through for the success of the team.

Sophomore Gabe Barnett fought doggedly during his match and won a tight competition by pinning his opponent. He came out on top, scoring six points for his team and adding to their clear victory.

“Tonight, we just all had to wrestle our own matches. We all had to focus on ourselves and make sure we did what we needed to get done. Personally, I was trying to pin my kid and I pinned my kid so that felt great,” Barnett said.

Junior Rafael Burgos clearly stood out during the match. With the points flying back and forth, Burgos was relentless and exhausted Newton with his vigor. He overcame a tough opponent winning with a 10-6 victory, scoring Brookline another six points.

Assistant coach Nick Tourville was pleased with the outcome but still hungry for more. He hopes for the team to win sectionals this weekend and possibly go on to be state champions.

“It’s not about winning,” said Tourville, “it’s about wrestling the best you can wrestle and we definitely did that tonight.”
