Year after year, designers invite celebrities to wear their looks to The Met Gala to express their creativity and experiment with over-the-top fashion. It is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City and marks the opening of the institute’s annual fashion exhibit. The attendees are required to wear something to match the theme of the gala, and this year, the theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” I’m going to give my honest opinion on some of the most popular looks and see if they lived up to Met Gala standards.

Billie Eilish: 8/10

This is definitely the biggest shock of the night. Eilish is known for her baggy, oversized clothes, so to see her in something more tight-fitting was a nice change of pace. The dress itself is stunning, and I love the dramatics of her look. However, the hair and the makeup are not my favorites, and I think they make her look a lot older than she actually is.

Frank Ocean: 3/10

I’m honestly not sure what is going on with this look. Ocean, himself, looks good, but the outfit is pretty basic. Plus, the green baby that he brought as an accessory is a very peculiar choice.

Emma Chamberlain: 7/10

There has been a lot of controversy on whether influencers should attend the Met Gala, but in my opinion, Chamberlain is definitely deserving of her spot. She has set countless trends of modern fashion, even unintentionally. My favorite part about this look is the makeup and hair. It’s classic, yet the graphic liner makes the makeup look fresh. The dress is a bit safe, especially for the Met Gala since it’s a place to wear something more avant-garde, but the whole outfit works well together.

Timothée Chalamet: 5/10

This look, from the top, reminds me of a waiter’s uniform while the bottom is very street style; I’m not sure how to feel about it. I wish he either stuck to being more streetwear, with the Converse and baggy pants or more formal, with the suit. To me, the look is not cohesive, but also not awful. He gets extra points for being a bit creative.

Barbie Ferreira: 9/10

I really love this look. It looks expensive with the pearl detailing and how the pearls fit along with the bustier. I’m not sure about the fringe at the bottom, since it’s a bit out of place with the nicely fitted top. The only thing I really dislike is the hair, but overall, the look is stunning.

Kendall Jenner: 8/10

Jenner looked gorgeous. This sheer fabric with silver detailing on top looks very regal. I love the little fringe details at the top of her dress and how her shoulder piece is connected to the rest of the gown. Everything is done very tastefully, but once again I feel like there is room to do bigger things at the Met Gala. Jenner wears a similar style of dress often, so this is very expected of her.

Iman: 11/10

To me, this is what the Met Gala is about. This look is bold, loud and not something you would typically see on a normal red carpet. Her makeup and hair are gorgeous and tie the whole look together. The giant golden headpiece is my favorite part of the look, especially because it makes this look stand out from the rest.

Simone Biles: 7/10

Biles decided to wear an 88-pound dress to the Met Gala. The silhouette is very interesting, and it’s definitely avant-garde. However, Biles is already petite and the dress swallows her up even more. I think I would like it more if the dress were less bulky on the sides, but she still looks great as is.

Kim Kardashian: 6/10

This was definitely a choice, but at least she did something different. Kim Kardashian is one of the few celebrities who can completely cover her face, yet everyone would still be able to tell who it is. I think this is kind of a power move, but I just don’t see how it’s relevant to the theme at all.

Overall, this year’s choices were a bit underwhelming. There weren’t too many standouts and oftentimes, I felt that the outfits didn’t connect to the theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” But, we can always reminisce about the 2018 Met Gala and wait until another one tops it.
