News:

The Brookline Education Foundation announced that BHS social studies teacher Roger Grande and Lincoln School teacher Sue Zobel have been selected to receive this year’s Ernest R. Caverly Award. The Foundation has been presenting the award since 1984 to outstanding Brookline educators. The candidates were chosen by the BEF board members and previous Caverly Award recipients. Grande and Zobel will accept their awards at the Celebrating Teachers event on May 15 at Newbury College Student Center from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The PTO has rescheduled former headmaster Bob Weintraub’s farewell reception for Sunday, May 20, 2012, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Atrium. When Weintraub announced his retirement last year, the PTO had planned an open dessert reception in his honor. However, he was seriously ill and experienced an extended hospital stay, which forced the event to be postponed. The reception is open to the community and free of charge, but for planning purposes, the PTO asks that you make a reservation here. Dessert and beverages will be provided.

Seventeen students registered for extended time, 11 of whom were BHS students did not receive the materials for their SATs on May 5. According to Assistant Headmaster Hal Mason, as the test began, the test administrator could not find the set of tests that held the materials for these students. “This set of exams was put into a box that was the old box that was labeled MCAS, so when they were looking for that set of exams in the morning on Saturday they didn’t find it. It was right there in the room the whole time. It was secure the whole time.” The students are scheduled to take the exam on May 19.

Sports:

On Thursday, May 10, the rugby team defeated BC High for the first time in 10 years. In an impressive game played on BC High’s home turf, senior Carl Miller scored three times. Even after the game had been clinched, senior Jerry Phok ran along the sideline to score once more in the last seconds. According to senior Collin Blinder, other strong showings included junior Mike Weinstein, who made several powerful kicks, and freshmen Bruce Phok and Devin Perkins. According to Blinder, BC High was a tough opponent. “They were a very strong side, but our boys had enough heart to tear through them,” he said.
