CHARLOTTE TOOLE/SAGAMORE STAFF
Julie Stubbs
Julie Stubbs began working at the high school this year as a social worker intern while also starting her first year at the Simmons School of Social Work. She was previously a psychology and English teacher for six years. She enjoys hiking, trying new foods and biking.
Why did you pursue social work?
I’ve wanted to [do social work] for a long time. I was a psychology and anthropology major. I love people, and I would love to work in a high school. One of my favorite things is to be a mentor. Having students trust me and making those relationships are the most rewarding parts.
What would you say are the most important things to keep in mind as a social worker?
I think context and remembering everyone is different. People come from different places and have different backgrounds and experiences. Everyone’s actions come from somewhere.
Were you a part of any clubs or programs in high school?
I played a sport every season. I started a dodgeball club my freshman year, which was interesting, but a lot of fun. A lot of senior boys joined it, which was cool, but having these guys that were going to play D1 baseball throwing volleyballs was a little intimidating. It did kind of introduce me a little more to the community. I think sports is really where I found my friend group.
What do you like to do outside of school?
I’ve enjoyed trying new foods around Boston. I don’t have a favorite restaurant but two of my go-tos, if I want pizza, are Pepi’s Pizza because it’s close and good pizza, and then Surya Indian kitchen in Cambridge, which is a casual Indian place but really good
