Boys varsity soccer (BVS) shut out Revere 2-0 for their third win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The reigning state champions have been off to a shaky start; their record currently stands at 3-7-4, but BVS may be able to secure a playoff spot if they win their final four regular season games.

From kickoff, Brookline dominated the game in both possession and unity. Revere seemed disconnected and was unable to string together a substantial series of passes.

Revere had some solid counterattacks but was no match for Brookline’s consistent and disciplined back line. Goalkeeper and junior Jackson Magee had several key saves that led the Warriors to a shutout.

Junior and midfielder Eamon Boshell has been a crucial player for the Warriors this year, scoring three goals in the past four games. Midway through the first half, Boshell netted the first goal against Revere.

At halftime, the Warriors were up 1-0 but were left wanting more. The second half showed even more connection and tenacity, as senior and captain Oscar Kulkarni scored off an assist from junior Liam Alcalay.

“We’ve been struggling to score a bit,” Kulkarni said. “It felt good to get on the scoresheet today.”

Brookline slowed down a bit near the game’s end and Revere had several free kicks in the Warrior’s half. They weren’t able to finish anything, however, and the final whistle blew with the Warriors up 2-0.

Center-backs and seniors Niko Sever-Walter and Ellery Nistler both played with impressive poise and skill. The Warriors’ best offensive chances often originated from key defensive plays. Sever-Walter said the fact that this is the team’s second win in a row is a sign they may be hitting their stride.

“We came with intensity and played our hearts out,” Sever-Walter said. “We showed a lot of heart and identity today. I’m proud of us as a whole.”

Kulkarni said the whole team has to step up for the rest of the season because a playoff spot for BVS is no guarantee.

“I think we feel good [today], but I don’t think we’re satisfied. I think we’ve got a lot to work on. We were dangerous today but we could do better,” Kulkarni said. “I think we’ve got to be a little more organized, and I think we’ve got to be a little more fluid in the final third.”

Senior Ethan Ghosh battled hard in the back, shutting down several of Revere’s dangerous players. He said Brookline matched Revere’s physicality well, but there is still room for improvement.

“We have to keep our head in the game from the minute we arrive to the minute we leave,” Ghosh said.

Boshell said this win is just one step on the Warriors’ journey to the playoffs.

“I think it’s good to get back to winning ways, you know; it’s been a while,” Boshell said. “But we’re a good team and when we play for each other we can win games, and we showed that today.”
