Boys varsity football end the game with a noble handshake line with the Weymouth Wildcats after a tough loss of 44-0.

The boys varsity football team lost to the Weymouth Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 28, making their record 1-7.

The game started with the Warriors on offense as they got first possession of the ball. After the first 20 seconds of the game, Brookline quarterback and junior Josh Karp’s pass was intercepted.

After the interception, the Wildcats got to the five-yard line of their own end zone. The Warriors needed a crucial third down stop but were unsuccessful as the Wildcats put six points on the board by running the ball into the endzone.

Instead of going for the extra point, the Wildcats went for the two-point conversion. When the Wildcats went to run it in, they were met with a wall of Warriors and were stopped in front of the endzone.

Later in the first quarter, the Wildcats scored six points with their second touchdown and were successful in their second attempt at a two-point conversion, bringing the score to 14-0.

The Warriors had a good field position with a 50-yard gain on their punt return. With a series of successful passes, wide receiver and senior Caetano Drinkwater gained yardage as he ran past two defenders, but the Warriors did not end up winning any points.

During the half-time break, the Brookline varsity cheerleading team performed a complex stunt and series of chants to involve the crowd.

Towards the end of the game, the Warriors had a series of successful plays and quickly moved downfield. Karp threw a dime to a receiver near the endzone but the Wildcats defender jumped in front of the Warriors receiver and intercepted it, leaving the Warriors unsuccessful in scoring.

The game ended in a Weymouth Wildcats victory with a score of 44-0.

Chad Hunte, University of Massachusetts Amherst football alumnus and head coach of the varsity football team since 2018, said that despite the team’s loss, he hopes the team is able to improve through their mistakes.

“[There were] lots of younger guys playing today, so it was nice to see [them] work hard and [use] the techniques we teach them,” Hunte said. “ Moving forward, we want to see a little more fight at the start of the game.”

However, Coach Hunte said that the loss showcased the team’s dedication.

“It was a tough game all around, [but] it was nice to see our kids keep fighting,” Hunte said. “[There is still] a lot to work on still but I appreciate the kids still going and keep pushing through.”
