“Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” impresses with fascinating theme and effects
Personal desires can often drive us in the wrong direction, but when are selfish actions justified? “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” explores the complexity of human relationships through a suspenseful and impressive film.
Paramount Pictures released their newest movie, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” on March 31. It features Chris Pine in the role of Edgin Darvis. The engaging plot and meaningful character development of Darvis made watching this film a great experience.
Darvis is a bard who tries to bring his wife back to life and save his daughter from the evil hands of the red wizards. He and his daughter join a team of warriors in search for the tablet of resurrection, in an effort to bring back Darvis’ wife. In their journey, they encounter Rogue Forge (Hugh Grant) and his acquaintance, Sofina (Daisy Head). Darvis finds the tablet and attempts to steal it, but he is captured. Forge takes Darvis’ daughter under his custody and betrays him by taking the tablet of resurrection for himself and brainwashing his daughter. Darvis escapes the prison and begins a great hunt to save his family. He follows his mission to find Paladin Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), who can tell him the secret to get the tablet.
Dungeons and Dragons is originally a game. The impressive use of elements and characters from the game contributed to the enjoyment of watching this movie. I was impressed with the use of character types, such as the Barbarian and the Rogue, because their personalities were represented well in the movie through Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez) and Forge. Also, several of the enemies Darvis faced are inspired by the monsters within the board game.
The soundtrack and sound effects were extremely engaging and played an important role in fully immersing the audience. The music was made by Lorne Balfe, the composer behind the music in the “Penguins of Madagascar” and the “Lego Batman Movie.” The fast tempo and rock instruments added to the suspense and captured my attention. Songs such as “Whole Lotta Love” and “Wings of Time” had a powerful tone followed by a grand cinematic nature, which made the movie feel intense and alive.
The film’s theme was one of the most interesting parts. Darvis began his journey with the goal of bringing his wife back to life and starting a better life for himself. However, he realized throughout that his relationships with his friends and daughter were more important than his personal desires. His character made me think about the importance of friendships in our way to happiness.
“Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” was an amazing film that took aspects from the famous board game and created a suspenseful plot with an important lesson. I recommend this film to anyone who likes adventurous fiction films.
