The girls varsity lacrosse team lost their first home game to the Acton-Boxborough Revolutions 10-7 on Tuesday, April. 2 at Downes Field. The Warriors persevered throughout the game but ultimately did not secure a win against the Revolutions. This loss brought their season record to 0-2.
The Revolutions won the initial tip-off, but the Warriors stole the ball. Soon enough, the Warriors had advanced to the side of the opponent’s goal, although the ball was ultimately thrown out of bounds, and they lost possession. Things were looking good for the Warriors until the Revolutions made a break across the field and scored the match’s first point with nine minutes and 38 seconds left in the first quarter. After the Warriors lost the first point, supporters shouted encouragement from the sidelines.
In a swift effort to even the playing field, the Warriors rallied against their opponent. Senior, goalie and captain Kaylyn Kirrane made a quick save when the Revolutions attempted a goal at close proximity, followed by junior and midfielder Birdie Hawkins, who scored just a minute later by quickly maneuvering from the X, the in-bounds area behind the net, and throwing the ball overhand into the goal.
The Warriors scored an additional goal to establish a lead, but the Revolutions scored a quick goal in the final minute of the first quarter, ending it with a score of 3-3.
Junior and midfielder Maggie Teahan said that going into the game, the team intended to play with as much energy as possible.
“We wanted to be super intense. Even if we were down, every quarter would be 0-0 in our heads so that we would just start from a clean slate,” Teahan said.
The second quarter kicked off with closely matched offense and defense from both teams until senior, midfielder and captain Abby Cooney passed the ball to Hawkins in a series of dodges and dashes. Hawkins then assisted Teahan, who scored with just 38 seconds left on the clock, tying the score at 4-4. However, just after the Warriors tied the score, the Revolutions scored again, bringing the score to 5-4 entering halftime with the Warriors down.
The third quarter did not go well for the Warriors, who struggled to defend against the increasingly aggressive Revolutions. The Revolutions yelled at one another from across the field as they tried hard to steal the ball at every opportunity. By the time the third quarter ended, the Revolutions had increased their lead against the Warriors to 8-4. Despite several fouls that gave the Warriors opportunities to score, they did not gain any points at the beginning of the second half.
Having made only one goal for the past two periods, the Warriors entered the fourth quarter more aggressively. However, it wasn’t enough to close the widening gap in the score, and in the first few minutes of the final quarter, the Revolutions scored another two points, making the score 10-4.
Despite a significant lead from the opponent, the Warriors attempted to close the gap in the final minutes of the game. In the last four minutes of the final quarter, Hawkins scored two goals, and Teahan scored one, bringing the final score to 10-7.
Cooney said that despite the loss, the team played cohesively and performed well when it came to scoring. She said that this game demonstrated a lot of growth in the team.
“I thought the team played well together, and we improved from our last game and with working with each other, especially on the offense,” Cooney said.
Head coach Julianna Nolloy said that the Warriors were capable of taking home the win and thinks improvement will be made over time.
“A big thing for a lot of the girls is going to be them stepping up into more of a leadership role. I think a lot of people are still playing afraid. So, just taking ownership and making sure that they’re the ones making plays,” Nolloy said.
Nolloy said that junior and defender Sydney Bueno, Kirrane, Hawkins and Teahan all played well and that she appreciated the team’s improvement from the last game.
“I thought Kaylyn had a great game in net today. She did a great job with her clears. I thought Sydney Bueno did a great job. She got a lot of turnovers, chasing the ball behind the net, which was awesome. And then Birdie and Maggie always do a great job scoring,” Nolloy said.
