The girls varsity softball team lost the third game of their season to the Natick Redhawks 20-1 on Monday, April. 8 at Cypress Field.
The game did not start well for the Warriors, with many Redhawks players on base, running and getting several points. The Warriors managed to throw, then got two outs in quick succession and succeeded in stopping further Redhawks advances. Three strikeouts from senior and pitcher Mia Fell eventually ended the Redhawks at bat and the Warriors closed out the inning with a few scoreless hits.
The Warriors continued to fight, catching fly balls and throwing strikeouts, but the Redhawks expanded their lead. The Warriors finally scored off of a home run from senior and captain Meredith Alland.
Despite continued effort, the Warriors couldn’t score again and the game ended with a 20-1 victory for the Redhawks. Junior and shortstop Cora Tracey said that the team had the right mindset going in and worked hard throughout the game.
“We put our hearts and our minds forward, and we were ready,” Tracey said. “And then the second thing that we did was we worked on our defense. We tried hard to stop these balls, get them to the right base and get them in.”
According to Tracey, the game didn’t go how the team wanted it to go, but they plan on practicing and coming back stronger.
“There are some things we know we need to work on, and we’re going to get to that in practice. This game is at the beginning of the season, so we’re getting started. It’s a very new team,” Tracey said. “But we’re ready to pull it together.”
Junior and team manager Cid Humphreys said that despite the loss, the Warriors showed impressive perseverance throughout the game.
“They had a tough first inning and it’s really hard to come back from those, it messes with your mind. I think they did a great job bouncing back and getting back in the zone and shaking it off. And whatever they messed up, they just kept on going and they kept on pushing through,” Humphry said. “That’s the true spirit of the game, they are able to get themselves out of a funk and I think that’s great.”
