Autumn leaves drifted about the air as students gathered around Make-a-Wish Club’s bake sale table, filled with brownies, cupcakes and more. The bake sale was held by the club after school on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in front of the STEM wing, to raise money to support club funding and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
The Make-a-Wish Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to spread awareness for children battling terminal illnesses. It raises money to allow these children to make “one wish” and provides a positive focus at difficult times.
This wish, co-founder, club co-president and sophomore Ishara Bhimani said, can be anything.
“That can be [to] go on a vacation that they’ve always wanted or get a pet or meet a celebrity. Something that will bring a smile to their face, a special opportunity that they might not have gotten otherwise,” Bhimani said. “The Make-a-Wish Foundation helps make those wishes come true. What we do as a club is help fundraise for them and for that cause.”
According to Bhimani, the club was founded at the beginning of this school year because current club members noticed that there was a lack of cancer awareness within the school, and they wanted to change that. The club has a fundraising goal of $12,000, which the club members are trying to accomplish by graduation for the class of 2027.
Co-founder, co-president and sophomore Mia Jones said the Make-a-Wish Club wanted to establish themselves and their mission through the bake sale.
“We’re brand-new this year, so I think we’re just trying to really have people understand what we’re trying to do and who we are,” Jones said.
The Make-a-Wish Club holds many fundraisers, and Jones said that its uniqueness stems from the hardworking club members who are dedicated to fulfilling the club’s aspirations.
“I think [Make-a-Wish Club is] just very driven,” Jones said. “We have a lot of active members that really work to get what we’re trying to accomplish done. I feel that sets us apart from other clubs because we do it, and we do it efficiently.”
