Ping-pong balls, hot glue, cereal boxes and mason jars. These simple home items all have one thing in common: they are the perfect materials to create Halloween decorations that will leave all of your neighbors jealous. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and every year the decorations I create become more and more elaborate. This year, I wanted to share some of my favorite crafts to help inspire you this Halloween season.
Potion Bottles
This is probably the easiest and most fun craft. First, go to your local thrift store (I recommend the Goodwill on 965 Commonwealth Ave.) and head straight to the homeware section. There are always tons of glass bottles and vases–usually only a dollar each– that are perfect for potions. Once you pick out your favorites you can fill them with colored water, dirt, jello, glitter, candy, cotton balls or anything else you can think of. As a bonus, you can write little labels on your finished potions. Some of my favorite names are Vampire’s Venom, Mermaid’s Tears, Witch’s Brew and Dragon Blood.
Tombstones
If your family is an avid cereal eater like mine, you should have plenty of materials for this craft. First, gather all of your empty cereal boxes and tape the top shut. Second, decide what you want to write on your tombstone then outline your letters in hot glue to make them pop off the cardboard. Next, paint your tombstone gray. If you want to add a weathered effect you can dip a sponge in green paint and dab it on parts of the tombstone. I would recommend creating a rectangular base and adding a green sponge as moss on it. If you have a skull or skeleton hands you can also have those poking out of the base.
Spider Webs
This next one is super easy and requires only hot glue and baking paper. First, draw or print out a clipart spider web. Then put your baking paper on top of your drawing or print it out and trace the lines with hot glue. Finally, pull the hot glue off the baking paper and you’re done!
Eyeball Wreath
This craft will probably require a trip to the dollar store or some Amazon shopping. The materials you will need are ping pong balls and a floral foam wreath. Once you have your supplies you can use a Sharpie to draw pupils on all of your ping pong balls. Then hot glue them around the wreath. Attach a string to the back so you can hang it on your door!
Lanterns
For this final craft, you will need some mason jars, any color spray paint and tea lights. First, very lightly spray your mason jars with spray paint. Make sure to do this outside and wear a mask. You want to make sure that the jar is not opaque so that you can still see the light through it. Then draw or print out classic Halloween silhouettes like a witch, black cat or haunted house. Cut out your silhouettes and glue them onto your lanterns. If you want to paint silhouettes directly on the jars, mix Elmer’s glue and black paint to make the paint less translucent. Finally, add your tea lights inside the jars!
That’s all for my favorite Halloween crafts of the year. Hopefully you feel inspired to get crafting because Halloween is fast approaching, grab your hot glue gun and become the best-decorated house on the street!
