Sounds of live music, laughter and leaves crunching on the ground filled the air as students and friends made their way from one station to the next at the William H. Lincoln School’s annual Pumpkinfest on Sunday, Oct. 20.
An annual fundraiser and a timeless tradition, Pumpkinfest is the biggest event of the school year at Lincoln School and brings the community together through arts and crafts, carnival games and food.
Lincoln School parent Chantal Boxer has been volunteering at Pumpkinfest for 10 years. Boxer said the money earned from the event is used to fund a variety of events and initiatives for the school community.
“[It’s for] everything. From putting on beginning- and the end-of-the-year picnics that we put on for free so our community can come and be together, to funding classroom supplies, putting on different events during the year. We do tons of support of our teachers and the team here,” Boxer said.
For Lincoln School parent Kristy Moore, this was her third year volunteering in Pumpkinfest. Though Moore loves the games such as “pie-in-the face” and the “cake walk,” Pumpkinfest’s ability to bring people together is her favorite part of the fundraiser.
“The community is amazing here. It brings out a lot of people when the weather is very nice like it is today,” Moore said.
Pumpkinfest isn’t solely for students who go to Lincoln. All Brookline members are welcome regardless of their school or age. Many high school students, including junior Finn Bruen, return to Pumpkinfest even after graduating from Lincoln. Bruen said his favorite Pumpkinfest game is the “cake walk,” a variation of musical chairs where kids have the opportunity to win an entire cake.
Boxer says her favorite part about Pumpkinfest is its ability to bring the school community together.
“I think it is honestly seeing the kids coming with their friends and roaming around and having such a good time participating,” Boxer said. “And also, I think for the parents too, it’s really nice for them to be able to volunteer with each other and get to know other people.”
