Senior Alexandra Wong has been playing softball since the fifth grade. In her first spring season at BHS, she was named captain for the freshman team. As captain for the junior varsity team during her sophomore year, she played mostly for the varsity squad. While positioned either at third base or in the outfield, she brings a positive attitude to the field and aims to help her team come out with a winning record this year.
Sag: What is the best part of being on the team?
AW: It is fun to be with your friends, even though we haven’t won games in a long time. It is fun to go after school and do a sport together.
Sag: How have you improved since you were a freshman?
AW: I have probably become more of a leader on the field. Freshman year, I was kind of shy; even though I was captain, I didn’t really feel like I led the team. I hurt my shoulder freshman year, but after the surgery, I was able to play spots other than just a pitcher, which is what I was for all of freshman year.
Sag: What was one of the proudest moments of your softball career?
AW: It was probably sophomore year, when they asked me to play for varsity. I was really caught of guard. I didn’t expect it because there were a lot of good players already, and they had a good team, but they still asked me to play.
Sag: What are you looking forward to this season?
Winning some games, hopefully. We have a new coach this year, and hopefully he will help us do something different.
Sag: Do you set goals for yourself during the season?
AW: I try to stay as focused as possible during the games because I don’t want to mess up.
Sag: What lessons have you learned while playing softball at BHS?
AW: It’s not all about winning. Brookline also needs to have a better youth program for softball. When people join the softball team, we advertise it as not needing experience. But, I think that weakens us and does not push us to be better.
