Girls varsity volleyball defeated the Quincy Presidents in their second-round playoff game, 3-0, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Schluntz Gymnasium.
The crowd was enthusiastic and energy was high as the Warriors took the court for their first set.
The Presidents won the first point with a hit, but the Warriors were quick to fight back. The first few points were scored back-to-back with no clear advantage.
Junior and outside hitter Emilie Ferdinand put the Warriors in the lead 5-3 with two hits.
The Warriors kept the lead the rest of the first set despite an aggressive offense from the Presidents. Sophomore and right-side hitter went in for the hit, and the Warriors won the first set 25-18.
Assistant coach Gregg Detwiler said Tipton’s play was one of the highlights of the game.
“I don’t think she had a hitting error, and she was just a beast on the court,” Detwiler said.
With some defensive faults early in the second set, the Warriors were down for the first time all game, 5-3. Big hits from Tipton and Ferdinand kept the Warriors in the game, and with the lead switching often, the score came to tie 13-13.
From then on the Warriors dominated offensively and maintained the lead, winning the second set 25-17.
The third set was close from the very start. The Warriors attacked hard and maintained only a one-point lead for the majority of the set.
The student section roared during the third set, hyping the team to keep attacking. With motivation from the crowd, junior Bella Bacon’s seven consecutive serves increased the Warrior’s lead to 19-11.
The Presidents scored three quick points near the end, but a hit from Bacon won the third and final set, 25-14, and the game along with it.
Senior and captain Serina Ohyama said that as the Presidents weren’t in their conference they did not know what to expect.
“We just really want to prepare well and maintain our energy,” Ohyama said. “We did a good job today but keeping the energy higher is important because we will probably play a stronger team.”
