The girls varsity soccer team beat the Brockton Boxers 10-1 on Tuesday, Nov. 5. at Parsons Field to win the round of 32 and advance to the round of 16.
The Warriors got off to a blazing start. Within the first ten seconds of the game, senior and captain Anna Leschly scored her first of four goals in the game. The Warriors never looked back, scoring six goals in the first half alone.
According to senior, captain and forward Sydney Freese, aggression and hustle drive the team.
“I think coming out strong from the get-go that’s something that we’ve been trying to work on a lot throughout the season,” Freese said.
Freese contributed massively as a forward, and scored three out of the ten goals. Freese said she attributes her performance to both her teammates and the fans who came out to Parsons to show their support.
“I think my teammates just set me up a lot. Our community gives us confidence so I think just being around them I know that I can try to take risks,” Freese said.
Senior and captain Makena Hammond also added to the Warriors’ win, finishing the game with both a goal and an assist. For Hammond, this being her last playoff run in high school, there is more at stake than ever.
“I think GVS has been the biggest thing for me in high school. It’s the most important thing in my life. So I really just want to go as far as we can and just play as much as I can with my best friends,” Hammond said.
On the other side of the ball, the Warriors played superbly defensively, only allowing the Boxers a single goal and a handful of shots on the net. Head coach Ben Peters said he was impressed, but not surprised by the defense’s performance.
“I think all season they’ve done really well communicating together, shifting together, just doing what defenders do,” Peters said.
Peters said the goal moving forward is simple for the Warriors.
“A long long run to the state championship,” Peters said. “And hopefully a trophy at the end of it.”
The Warriors are now moving on to the round of 16. Freese said as they continue to go deeper into the postseason, they know they will continue to face adversity and are prepared for it.
“We faced some adversity this season so I think we all know that,” Freese said. “So we know that we’re a very strong team and that we’ve got ourselves.”
