Since its creation a year ago, what started as an AP final project has blossomed into a vibrant community where future architects and artists come together and create. Senior Vishnu Urs shares his passion within the small but welcoming corner that is the 3D Modeling Club.
The 3D Modeling Club, located in room 409, meets every X-block. Urs has been the solo founder and two-year president of 3D Modeling. He guides beginners and professionals alike through the essentials of modeling. More experienced students collaborate to mentor newcomers through concepts and learn progressively toward larger end goals.
Sophomore Jonathan Yeh said that he has been a dedicated club member since the start of the school year and that he appreciates the creative outlet that modeling provides.
“My favorite part of 3D modeling is probably the ability to visualize stuff I wouldn’t be able to otherwise in the physical world. It helps me express my creativity, mainly,” Yeh said.
Junior Ryan Liu said that the most fascinating part of the process of 3D modeling is the artistry and beauty behind it.
“My favorite part of 3D modeling is that I want to just create a model, and shading it, adding texture over it, that makes it pretty beautiful,” said Liu. “That’s why I love it.”
Urs said that the club welcomes students of all ranges of experiences so that everyone has a place to learn. He said that he founded the club to share his passion and provide a space for like-minded individuals to connect and learn.
“People have different skill levels,” Urs said. “Some people have years of experience, some people don’t have any experience at all and that’s the point of the club. It’s fine, no matter what experience you have you can still play a big part.”
Urs decided to start the club as a space where members can share knowledge in various skills such as compositing, modeling, sculpting and texturing. He said that teaching is a powerful tool which is fulfilling to all involved.
“It also helps me. I feel like teaching is another way of learning in a sense,” said Urs.
Yeh said that the club provides a supportive environment for growth. He stressed the importance of gradual learning to build a deeper and more effective understanding, rather than rushing through concepts.
“I’d say with community-based learning, people can catch up really fast, and not only that but we don’t really learn much every day. We kind of just have small baby steps towards becoming experts in the field,” Yeh said.
Urs said that he hopes the club will be an inclusive environment where everyone can feel valued and actively improve. He said that by creating a welcoming space, the 3D Modeling Club can continue to inspire creativity and encourage and empower its members to pursue their passion.
“I just want people who are really interested and generally really passionate about modeling,” Urs said. “I think that’s more important than having so many people come, but it’s always great the more people we have.”
Urs said that the collaborative nature of the club allows members to progress at their own pace in an inclusive space where everyone can contribute and learn from each other, regardless of their experience.
“I’ve also learned a lot from other club members,” Urs said. “Some of the members have a lot of experience and have taught me things. So I think it’s cool if we all have a space where we can come together and work on something.”
