In a sport often characterized by solitary swings, the boys varsity golf team has transformed camaraderie into their strongest club, leading them to a successful season and a shot at sectionals.
In a season marked by standout performances and close matches, the team has found that their camaraderie is as vital as their swings. Ending the season with an impressive 14-4 record, head coach and culinary arts teacher David Ford credits their bond on and off the course for pushing them to success and earning a spot at sectionals. He said their close-knit dynamic has given them an edge in a sport often dominated by individual performance.
“Team chemistry is a big part of it,” Ford said. “At the varsity level, you don’t play unless you score well. However, having good personalities meshing on the team is a huge factor.”
Junior Jack Herman said the team’s connections create an encouraging atmosphere during matches.
“If a team has good chemistry, it leads to success,” Herman said. “We’re all friends, and we get along. When you’re comfortable with the people around you, you’re out there having a good time and playing well.”
Beyond the technical aspects of the game, Ford puts an emphasis on collaboration to create a team culture where players feel motivated. Herman said Ford’s ability to balance constructive feedback with encouragement allows players to perform with confidence under pressure.
“Mr. Ford is one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. He’s really nice and down to earth,” Herman said.
The team’s unity and Ford’s coaching proved especially valuable when the team faced a demanding schedule of back-to-back matches. According to junior Ryan Lackey, the win that qualified them for sectionals felt like a culminating moment, reflecting the team’s hard work and dedication.
“We needed a certain number of wins and we got it,” Lackey said. “It was exciting because it meant we had a chance to go to States.”
Whether it’s cheering each other on during a tough round or providing reassurance after a miss, the players consistently lift each other up. This shared sense of purpose not only keeps morale high but also helps the team stay mentally tough. Lackey said the team’s support for one another made all the difference this season.
“Everyone supporting each other and working well together can really help the team perform,” Lackey said. “I think we’ve done that this season.”
