On Sunday, May 19, Headmaster Deborah Holman announced that she was choosing associate dean Anthony Meyer to be BHS’s new dean of students. In an email to parents Holman wrote the following:
I am very happy to announce that I’ve chosen Anthony Meyer to be BHS’s new Dean of Students.
Anthony brings a huge number of strengths to the position including eight years of teaching English at Brookline High and a strong track record of being an associate dean. During our search process, Anthony impressed faculty, administrators, parents, and students with his ability to re-introduce himself to his colleagues, articulate his vision of the Dean position, and envision a BHS moving into the future and his role in that trajectory.
Anthony has the asset of being a “BHS insider” with valuable outsider sensibilities. He has international education experience from his work in Latin America early in his career; he taught in an urban Seattle high school and then at Parker Charter School, a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools; he has important experience in special education from his work at the Gifford School. These varied experiences, coupled with Anthony’s leadership sense and his ability to listen and collaborate, make me confident and excited about his assuming the Dean position.
Anthony will begin this position on July 1, which may sound like he will get no vacation, but we will work that out so he can catch his breath.
Briefly, I also want to comment on the value of this elongated search process. Arduous at times for candidates, committee members, and co-chairs, the process nevertheless proved its value by slowing down selection and giving candidates varied platforms on which to interact with our community. Each piece of the process allowed useful observation of and interaction with our strong pool of finalists. Particularly useful to me as new headmaster. So thank you again to the Dean search committee, Hal Mason and Gary Shiffman (committee co-chairs), and all who participated last week.
Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Anthony Meyer.
