Reflecting on her 20 years working at the school, learning center teacher Sally Noteware said she appreciated the variety of unique opportunities she was offered.
“I’ve been able to do a variety of different jobs here and that isn’t necessarily true in other public school settings,” she said.
For the past eight years, Noteware has served as the leader of Tutorial, a course that provides sophomores, juniors and seniors with academic assistance.
“I liked the idea of the Tutorial program. I thought it could benefit a lot of kids,” she said.
Before leading Tutorial, Noteware worked as a special education teacher and as teacher liaison to the 21st Century Fund.
Noteware conducted two studies. The researchers were funded by a grant from the Brookline Education Foundation to investigate ways of alleviating student stress.
Before teaching in Brookline, Noteware had taught for 10 years in Natick’s public school system. In Brookline, Noteware said she enjoyed “a lot of support from other teachers, a lot stronger administration and expectation of excellence for teachers.”
Noteware said she believes the most crucial element in teaching is forming relationships with students and fellow teachers.
She said it is important “to get to know who the people are that you’re working next to, whether that be student or teachers, let them get to know you and use that as a basis.”
Noteware would advise teachers at the school to take advantage of the support and programs available.
“I really appreciated the opportunity to try different things and test out different skills,” she said.
