School Within a School staff announced at its weekly town meeting on Sept. 25 that it would postpone this year’s overnight trip due to concerns that the structure of the trip would not guarantee appropriate student behavior, SWS Curriculum Coordinator Dan Bresman said.
A decision has yet to be made about whether the overnight will happen at all this year, though Bresman said he is hopeful it will. In the meantime, the Student Planning Committee is organizing a day trip for the community which will be held Friday, Oct. 4.
Bresman, who said the overnight has been cancelled in the past, said that “sometimes [staff] concerns get elevated based on feedback from students on previous events,” though he did not explicitly state that such concerns had been raised this year.
Bresman said SWS staff met to discuss if they felt any inappropriate activities had a likelihood of happening on the overnight. Their self-reflection led them to the decision that the structure needed to be revised, he said.
“The overnight is an important event that we all value, but in order for the staff to feel comfortable extending themselves and taking their extra time to go, they have to feel comfortable with the structure of the trip,” Bresman said. “The staff got to a place in reflecting on it that they weren’t as comfortable as they wanted to be.”
