Imagine looking in a mirror and seeing a shiny bald head instead of your beautiful locks. To some, this is just imagination, but to others, it is a reality.
The CARE (Curing and Reaching Everyone) will host Be Bold, Be Bald, a national event where people trade in their manes for bald caps, on Dec. 10 (though the event officially took place nationwide on Oct. 18).
“It just represents and symbolizes the people who go through chemotherapy and the people who have lost their loved ones because of cancer, ” senior Lucy Hwang said.
The CARE club will be selling the bald caps and donating the money to the Jimmy Fund to help support those fighting cancer, said senior Renata DiDonato, a club member. The club also hopes this fundraiser will raise awareness to the students.
“I think a lot of kids will do it because it will be a fun thing to do, to just look a little different for a day and not be judged by everyone else if a lot of people are doing it,” DiDonato said.
According to DiDonato, the event is not only a way to raise awareness and fundraise, but a chance for students to express their feelings for the cause.
“I think it’s just a good opportunity to show you care, especially to people who are having a hard time and just want to know we aren’t judging them,” said DiDonato. “It doesn’t matter the appearance. It’s what matters on the inside if you can fight through it. I think we are helping people to believe in themselves.”
ETA: Care Club donated $820 to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on December 23.
