Since hitting the Philippines on Friday, Nov. 8, Typhoon Haiyan has been responsible for 5,235 deaths, according to the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced due to one of the most powerful storms ever to make landfall.
The Red Cross Club is making several efforts to assist in the ongoing relief effort, according to junior and Red Cross Club co-president Maya Chan. The club is associated with a state-level Red Cross organization, the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), which is working on a statewide candy catalogue event with the help of a Massachusetts candy business.
The business, Chan said, will distribute catalogues to Red Cross volunteers, who will have a competition to see who can sell the most catalogues. Money made from the orders will go to benefit the Philippines. The YAB, according to Chan, aims to raise $10,000 through this fundraiser.
The Red Cross Club is also, according to Chan, talking with the Asian Pacific American Club (APAC) about working together on a separate fundraiser, although no specific fundraiser has been decided upon.
“So far what the Red Cross Club has been thinking is we might do this coin drive thing throughout Brookline. We’ll get empty water jugs and put them all around Brookline. It’s just a spare change drive, so if people have spare change, they can just toss it in,” Chan said. “We’ve been talking to other people on the Red Cross board, and it’s been really successful. People have made thousands of dollars from it. Hopefully we’ll generate some money from it, too.”
Although Chan said she did not know of anyone who had been directly affected by the typhoon, she said that the relief effort was a very worthwhile cause.
“I know they must be having a really hard time; thousands of people were affected,” Chan said. “So, anything that you can do, please do.”
