To endure the cold winter months, people often turn to the comfort of hot cocoa and warm blankets. This winter, teenage girls have adopted the same idea of comfort into their personal styles.
Many teenage girls can be seen walking the halls in leggings, boots and oversized sweaters. In terms of sweaters, anything comfy, big and easy to wear is a popular fashion choice, sophomore Talia Putnoi said.
“I really like sweaters that are in neutral colors,” junior Maya Shashoua said. “In the winter I don’t really tend to wear a lot of bright colors; I wear mostly black, white and gray. But I do like the maroon color that is really popular, and also olive green.”
As oversized sweaters have increased in popularity, students search to find stores that have the perfect snug styles to protect them against the winter chill.
“I shop at thrift shops, Urban Outfitters, Free People and my mother’s closet!” Putnoi said. “My mom’s old stuff is just comfortable, cozy and fun. Plus, I love the way it has sentimental value as well as looks good.”
Accompanying the soft sweaters, leggings add to the new and trendy winter look. Leggings are extremely popular and many people wear them, senior Sandrine Ducharme said.
“If it’s a yucky, cold day outside, I wear leggings and a sweater, usually with my jean jacket,” Putnoi said.
Scarves such as the infinity scarf, and big scarves in general, are also a popular trend, according to Ducharme. Another trend is knitted scarves with cool patterns, Shashoua said.
Boots are also a cold-weather staple that can be seen each year. Combat boots are a warm and comfortable style of shoe for this winter, junior Clara Marton said. According to Putnoi, Doc Martens, a brand of combat boots, are very cool.
The winter months are a struggle for some due to the lack of heat and sunshine, and those components might be reflected in one’s outfit choice.
“A lot of people use fashion as a way to express their personality, and sometimes I find my clothes reflect my mood,” Shashoua said. “If I’m really upset, I’ll wear really dark colors, but if I’m in a good mood, I’ll wear brighter colors. They generally reflect my level of effort that day.
