When did you start doing makeup?

I started in 8th grade, but I only got okay at it this year.

Why do you wear makeup?

It’s fun! I get to experiment with colors on my eyes. It’s like drawing, but on my face. I don’t have to show people a drawing, they can just look at my face and they’re like, “Wow, you really did some art,” and I’m like, “Yeah, I did!”

What would you say to people who say that makeup is just for people to hide their faces and to impress other people?

It depends. If someone is doing makeup to impress other people they should try to find a way to do their makeup for themselves, but when people who genuinely enjoy doing makeup are told they’re doing it for attention, it’s frustrating. It’s not always for somebody else. The main motive behind people doing things is because they want to do them. I get dressed in the morning because I want to get dressed. I wear the clothes that I wear because I like what I wear. If I didn’t actively want to paint my eyes then I wouldn’t do it.

What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists?

Just do it! I was afraid to too. I thought I wasn’t going to know what I was doing. I was afraid that people were going to yell at me, like “You don’t know what you’re doing, your makeup is weird,” but just try it. Then you learn so much just from doing it. You don’t even have to take lessons or anything. You just get accustomed to your materials and your eyeshadows and all of your stuff, and you can develop a sixth sense for what you’re doing.

What’s your go-to favorite product that you would recommend?

The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. It’s so good! You can’t beat it.
