The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MADPH) updated its masking guidance for indoor spaces on Friday, June 10. With a decrease in COVID cases, indoor masking will be optional regardless of vaccination status effective July 1.

According to the MADPH, 84 percent of Massachusetts residents are fully vaccinated, with more than half of adults also boosted.

Public Health Commissioner Margret Cooke reminded residents that getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against serious illness or hospitalization from COVID-19.

“Based on our nation-leading vaccination efforts, MADPH now recommends that Massachusetts residents have the option to make a personal choice about wearing a mask or face covering in indoor settings regardless of vaccination status,” Cooke said.

In Brookline, masking will remain required in town-owned areas regardless of vaccination status.

Masking continues to be advised for those with a weakened immune system, increased risk for severe infection due to age or those that live with someone who is at risk.
