The sky’s the limit: a rating

Since childhood, I was always taught to appreciate the little things. Looking up at the sky each day, I’ve learned to gaze at the bright colors and wondrous possibilities. Of course, this resulted in my own absurd day-to-day opinions. For the purpose of rating the sky each day based on three categories, (the clouds colors, and pattern) I took daily pictures of the sky for a week.

The clouds:
Off to a great start with multitudes of clouds overlapping one another, an angelic, but near-empty view comes into light. Towards the bottom, the clouds are darker in color, yet surrounded by light.

The colors:
There is not a lot going on in terms of color scheme. The sky itself is a royal blue. Since this picture was taken on Halloween, I would have wanted to see the sky portray a spookier vibe.

The pattern:
I would say the arrangement is pretty random. The clouds are all over the place and the colors don’t make a coherent pattern. I like to think this lack of structure makes the sky interesting to look at. However, the lack of a spooky vibe makes for a lower overall rating.

Overall rating: A solid 4/10

The clouds:
Simply put, they’re everywhere. The clouds are mixed into one seemingly-looking blob. For the day after Halloween, I would say this sets a very dull mood. Fitting.

The colors:
Gray, gray and gray. Nothing interesting is happening here. We can see some specks of light peeking out, begging for an escape just like the people looking up and passing by.

The pattern:
What pattern? B o r i n g. It’s a blob.

Overall rating: 1/10

The clouds:
This picture was clearly taken in the evening. Mostly because I forgot to take it before the sun went away. There are no clouds present here, but a very interesting color scheme. More on that in the next category!

The colors:
The gradient is beautiful! Going from a darker blue to a lighter one, this sky definitely sets the tone for a nice evening fall stroll. Of course, the tree branches in the foreground/background add to this effect.

The pattern:
The lack of clouds allows for the gorgeous sky to shine. Despite this, I wish there were stars present in the sky to amplify the shimmer. This factor definitely would have given it a higher rating.

Overall rating: 6.5/10

The clouds:
Wow! Where to start with this image?! The clouds and chemtrails make me wish this was a 360 degree image. The straight lines over the blue background give off a hopeful vibe, a nice reminder to stay positive.

The colors:
Getting off track from the sky for a second, the colors of the leaves make me feel like it’s spring again, even in the depths of winter. I can confidently say this image is definitely one of my favorites.

The pattern:
The clouds and chemtrails are almost parallel to one another, creating an aesthetically-pleasing symmetrical effect. Symmetrical photos tend to stick out to me the most. There is a lot happening in this picture. But in this case, “a lot” is a good thing.

Overall rating: 9/10

The clouds:
Here, the clouds decorate the sky in thick layers. This image really brings the saying “the sky’s the limit” to life, encouraging all to keep moving forward and never stop.

The colors:
The different shades of gray among the clouds give the sky a mystical feeling, straight out of a fantasy novel. Of course, we can see that the sky itself is blue, but almost fully covered by the clouds at hand.

The pattern:
Clouds over clouds over clouds over clouds: pure beauty despite the bits of blue that can still be seen.

Overall rating: 8/10

The clouds:
I have so much to say about this picture! The intensity of the clouds on the right in comparison to the soft and innocent clouds on the left create a “good vs evil” conflict, in which the evil is winning. The distribution, size and shape of the clouds make the sky both intense and interesting.

The colors:
Making yet another “good vs evil” reference, the colors on the right side are much darker than the colors on the left. This not only sets a tone for the image, but makes it worthwhile to gaze at in awe.

The pattern:
The sun’s light at the bottom-left of the image sets a wave of darkness and light. The pattern of this image (divided exactly by the streetlamp) exaggerates the two, creating the long lasting effect of the two sides fighting, yet existing peacefully with one another.

Overall rating: 9.5/10

The clouds:
The contrast of the clouds makes this image both unexpected and beautiful. The booming intensity of the gray in comparison to the bright orange puts a smile on my face. I definitely stared out of my window for a long time before taking this photo.

The colors:
The orange-filled sky on the right side creates feelings of hope and longing. It is always my favorite when the sky turns orange and colors my mind in a bright and positive way.

The pattern:
Despite a clear color divide, there is not much of a pattern here. Oh well.

Overall rating: 8/10
