ELLA KENNEDY/STAFF MEMBER

After 130 years, our newspaper will be changing its name out of respect for Indigenous communities.

To our valued community,

We want to personally express our excitement about the newspaper’s name change. This change has been a long time in the making and now that it is finally here, we feel both proud and hopeful.

Our paper has been a cornerstone of this high school for 130 years, and by changing its name, we are embarking upon a historic journey. This issue marks our most important to date, and we hope the community can see its magnitude.

The name change is both an ending and a beginning. We hope this encourages future staff to continue coverage of Indigenous voices and internally discuss our values. As we prepare to leave Brookline High School at the end of the year, we look forward to seeing how future staffs will expand on the work begun this year.

We hope that you engage in this process with us. Please take the time to read some of our content about the name change and Indigenous communities. Online, our main article about the name change has a reading list with many resources to learn more. One of our biggest takeaways from this process is the importance of taking time to understand others’ stories, and we invite you to do the same.

We look forward to reviewing your submissions for our new name.

All our best,

Eleanor Bergstein, Anya Rao and Anisa Sharma
