Kimberly Usseglio is an AP Biology and Chemistry teacher. This is her ninth year teaching AP Biology but her first teaching Chemistry. She is a mom of two (one of whom was born this summer). She enjoys listening to “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift and the soundtrack from “Sing” with her kids.
What was a highlight from your high school experience?
I played sports in high school. I played field hockey and ran track, and it was helpful since I was quiet in class. I had that outlet to talk to other people in a different setting. It definitely translated into me just being more social. I’d tell people that joining a sports team or a club would benefit their experience.
What’s some advice you’d give to a high schooler?
I would say to any high schooler to enjoy the experience, don’t hyperfixate on the grades. Do well, but take in the whole experience. Try out different classes and meet different people.
What is a dream vacation destination that you have?
I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I’ve also been seeing a lot about the Azores. I have two kids, and I’ll have to wait until they’re a little older to bring them or leave them here. I think I’d like to bring them, so I need them to be a little bit stronger so they can do hikes.
What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
I enjoy going to the beach or my lake house in Sturbridge. [My family will] go hang out there. It’s just a little cottage. It’s great to relax and unwind.
Who was your role model growing up or someone you looked up to?
I’ve always looked up to my parents. They worked really hard. They didn’t go to college, but they worked hard to make sure that my siblings and I could.
What was your dream job as a child?
I wanted to be a dolphin trainer. When I was in middle school, I read a book about being a dolphin trainer but realized I was never going to pass the swimming test. I was always intrigued by the beach and the ocean, so my undergrad was in marine biology. I did work at the aquarium for a little bit, but I realized that it probably wasn’t going to happen.
